Before your first little baby enters the world, you’re blissfully unaware of all the anxiety and worry that comes along with parenthood.
Once you have a kiddo at home, you probably turn to Dr. Google for endless advice. Having that much information available about parenting and child development is a bit of a blessing… and a curse.
I know firsthand that feeling of guilt and pain if your child isn’t speaking as much as other children their age. Or the shame and fear that comes from your child’s teacher pointing out that they’re behind their peers.
If you are feeling this way, take a deep breath, hug your sweet child, and know that there’s free help available.
Free Screenings
A speech-language pathologist (or speech therapist for short) can meet with your child for about 20 minutes and do a screening.
Screenings are a “quick check” that will help determine if your child needs more testing or not. It will involve things like naming age-appropriate pictures, repeating words, and following basic directions (e.g., can you touch your nose?).
At Belmar Therapy in Albuquerque, NM we provide speech and language screenings at no cost to you. We are licensed speech therapists with experience working in hospitals, schools, and family’s homes.
An Individualized Approach
Our therapists won’t just compare your child to a standardized chart; we will look at them as a whole person. And we’ll work with you every step of the way.
If everything seems okay but you’re still worried, we can discuss options. We can teach you ways to work at home or schedule another screening in a few months.
If your child does need some more testing or therapy, we are happy to help schedule it at our clinic or with another speech therapist in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, or Los Lunas. Learn more here about finding a certified Speech Therapist
